Mavis Vermaak

Death Poems

Mavis Vermaak takes her audience on a sonic journey, exploring, through the words of beloved poets, the beautiful mystery known as death. To her own music, Mavis will read from the works of e.e. cummings, Inayat Khan, Johannes Brahms, Mary Oliver, Breyten Breytenbach, Ingrid Jonker and more, including some of her own work.

Mavis Vermaak is a South African poet, songwriter and vocalist. Based in Cape Town, Mavis enjoys creating soulful, sonic landscapes with an evocative, organic feel. In 2008, her self-titled, five-track debut EP, produced by Juan Penguin, was released to critical acclaim. Over the course of 2010 and 2011, again teaming up with producer Juan Penguin, Mavis completed her first full-length album - a collection of compositions of Afrikaans translations of works by the 13th century mystic poet Rumi.
