“I’m a Proud African Child” is just one of the poems that will touch your heart and leave you wanting more. Their dynamic dances of African, Hip Hop and Ballet is poetry in motion!
Both groups were formed in order to give graduates specialised training to equip them for a professional career in the Performing Arts. Through dance classes and other activities, the students learn a wide range of life skills, most importantly self-discipline and self-confidence.
The Next Step Dance Company and First Step Ballet, McGregor was founded in 2014 by Mary Corpe who has extensive international experience as a professional dancer/performer and has taught dance and drama for over 35 years. The vision and mission is to prepare talented dancers, actors from underprivileged rural backgrounds for entry into a dance/theatre academy once they have completed high school. The preparation involves dance, speech and drama, literature and poetry. Since starting these projects the students have flown. The Next Step have appeared on SABC2 teen programme Hectic Nine-9 and First Step appeared on Mooiloop demonstrating a Ballet class. Their confidence and self-worth has soared and their dedication and discipline continues to go from strength to strength.
